PR1MARY SPACE
In late 2002, my friend Carrie Hazel approached me with an idea: to open our own art gallery in Hamtramck for artists we admired - emerging, established, or otherwise. Years earlier Carrie and I had served as director and graphic arts director, respectively, at CPOP Gallery in Detroit, curating, promoting, and hosting dozens of shows with Rick Manore and Tom Thewes. Since leaving CPOP we had both missed Detroit’s incredible arts community and the excitement of sharing its work.
This would be our opportunity to try it on our own, with Carrie as lead curator, and me as co-curator and designer. I jumped at it.
PR1MARY SPACE opened in 2003 on Yemans Street, just off Joseph Campau, with a 10-artist group show called Art Array 01. Following that first show we hosted nearly 3 dozen shows featuring a wide array of artists from Detroit, Cleveland, New York, Chicago, San Francisco/Oakland, Los Angeles, Portland and more.
This page showcases the graphic design that comprised the gallery’s identity, show promotions, and more.
